Sep 01 2011A whole lot of new digging

A whole lot of new digging happening at the “Old Field” workings. Test drilling had found opal below the levels previously worked at this opalfied, so huge D9 Caterpillars were removing the overburden to get down the the opal level.

New parcels of opal from these working should be showing up on the internet soon. Visited with Patsy and Dan Tucker at their camp in Mintabie. Patsy and Dan are expat Americans who left the USA during the 1960’s to raise their children in Alice Springs NT. Dan was a school teacher at the Springs and was bitten by the opal bug later in life. After retirement Dan and Patsy made a permanent move to Mintabie to enjoy the outback Australian bush lifestyle and continue mining opal. They’ve made many sucessful opal strikes over the years and they are still chasing the elusive Mintabie opal as Dan just turned 80.
