I was in Coober Pedy from September 17th to September 24th 2017. And I was fortunate to find several very nice parcels of rough opal direct from the opal miners. Compared to my May 2016 trip to Oz I’d say the prices were comparable but the supply of opal was up. It’s possible there were a few new miners in town, but my go-to miners had opal as well as a few new miners I’d not dealt with previously. If you’d like a few more details just take a peek at my 2017 trip report here: Trip Report 13 . Lots of photos in the trip report as well.
There was a lot of mining activity at Opal Valley that could be seen from the Stuart Highway. And Hans Peak on the border with Greek Gully or 11 Mile Opalfield was producing a fair amount as well. I’d heard there were many miners working the newly opened Shellpatch Opalfield areas that had been closed due to aboriginal cultural sensitivities. I picked up a couple small parcels of lovely opal from Shellpatch Opalfield which I was glad to find.
