Dead Horse Gully Opalfield, discovered in 1972, is one of the few small outlying opalfields in the Coober Pedy Precious Stones field, lying about 20km northwest of Coober Pedy, that has seen quite a bit of action in recent years. The opal found here is primarily grey to semi-black base with vivid crimson reds and rich lapis blues, as can be seen in these photographs.
These stones are primarily suitable for inlay, doublets or smaller sized opal cabochons.
